Academy of the Sacred Heart
The formal gardens and oaks provide a gracious setting for the Academy. Founded in 1821, it is the oldest school in Acadiana and the second oldest school in the U.S. west of the Mississippi. The main building houses the Shrine of St. John Berchmans where Mary Wilson was miraculously cured by then Blessed John Berchmans. The new boys school is named in his honor. Founded under the direction of Saint Philippine Duchesne, the Academy has remained in continuous operation through fire, epidemic and war.

Church of St. Charles Borromeo
This magnificent and predominately wooden structure designed by New Orleans architect James Freret is architecturally the finest gem in the Grand Coteau crown. Following the approval of the plans by Pope Pius IX, the first cornerstone was blessed and placed on March 19, 1879. The rear belfry was a significant addition to the church in 1886. Its second empire style with mansard roof is rare and possibly unique among churches in the United States: It houses a 3,104 pound bell rung today. St. Charles Church has a superb collection of religious art. Stained glass windows, paintings, statues and ornate altars abound.
